Over the past 15 years, development of the Choutuppal magnetic observatory has enabled evaluation of environmental effects such as groundwater changes and lightning activity on magnetic data. A high-resolution magnetic survey produced a 2D shallow-surface model, supporting the selection of a secondary variometer room (SVR) site. The analysis considers topography, lightning impact, soil resistivity, magnetic anomaly, and distance from the recharge pond to ensure higher quality and more consistent data than currently achieved.
Magnetic data modelling across profiles showing layered structures of sandy regolith, saprolite, and granitic basement (left), reduced-to-equator anomaly (top-right), and inverted saprolite interface depth (bottom-right) in the study region. The proposed new SVR site is marked with a red star.
