Groundwater in Telangana, India, is under pressure from heavy use and climate change. Using satellite data (GRACE), researchers found strong links between rainfall, farming seasons, and underground water changes from 2002–2020. Most water loss comes from groundwater use, especially in dry seasons. This highlights the importance of satellite data in tracking droughts and managing water sustainably in semi-arid regions.
Validation of groundwater storage variability and observed water level recorded from the bore wells. Both variables show a strong correlation, depicting the nature of storage variability across Telangana. GWS, groundwater storage.
Temporal variability of TWS and GWS in Telangana with respect to rainfall. Both the variables show a strong seasonality over the study period and capture the ENSO signals in the region well.
