Student Affairs Committee (SAC) aims to foster and expand pathway programs to support students pursuing research careers. SAC nurtures the student community by developing skilled individuals and enhancing abilities through various programs and initiatives. Internship Training:

Purpose: To offer short-term internship opportunities to "selected candidates" in the fields of Geophysics, Geology, Geochemistry, and other related Earth Science domains within the scope of CSIR-NGRI’s research mandate.

Objective: To nurture young academic talent with opportunities to contribute to CSIR-NGRI’s research work and advance their careers.

Eligibility: Postgraduate students of any recognized university/institution studying subjects such as Geophysics, Geology, and Earth Sciences in their second year or last semester, and he/she should secure at least 70% and an equivalent CGPA grade or above in their previous year or last semester.

Period: The internship period shall be at least six weeks but not exceeding eight weeks. Interns not completing the requisite period will not be issued any certificate.

Mode of training: In person - at the Institute only. No virtual training is allowed.

How to apply: The internship shall be available in three phases in a year, as detailed below. All the applications are accepted online. No other mode will be accepted. The following are the deadlines for submission of applications every year.

Benefits:

  • Receive a Certificate upon completion of their Internship with a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks duration and submission of the Report.

  • The internship is unpaid, but we provide complimentary shared accommodation valued at approximately Rs. 1500/- per month. However, individuals opting not to utilize the provided accommodation cannot request the mentioned amount as a salary or for reimbursement purposes.

Terms & Conditions:

  • All ‘Intern trainees’ should follow the rules and regulations of CSIR-NGRI during their stay at NGRI Campus (Laboratory & quarters)

  • Extension of accommodation will not be allowed later than 8 weeks’ time. Hence,

  • you must complete your internship training and return journey within 6-8 weeks.

  • The Internship Training Report should be submitted within 21 days of their completion of tenure, i.e., June 22, Sep 22 and Feb 22 for batches 1,2 and 3, respectively.

Master Dissertation:


Purpose:To provide students with the opportunity to work in a world-class research environment, mentored by experienced scientists and researchers, to address research questions and challenges in major disciplines such as Geophysics, Geology, Geochemistry, and other related Earth Science domains within the scope of CSIR-NGRI’s research mandate.

Objective: To provide young researchers at CSIR-NGRI with opportunities to gain hands-on research experience, fostering innovation and creativity.

Eligibility: Postgraduate students of any recognized university/institution studying subjects such as Geophysics, Geology, and Earth Sciences in their second year or last semester, and he/she should secure at least 70% and an equivalent CGPA grade or above in their previous year or last semester. Later, the candidate must apply online and submit the required documents (i.e., a Consent letter from a CSIR-NGRI Scientist and a Letter from the Parent Institute). Period: The internship period shall be allowed at least four (4) months and a maximum of six (6) months, twice a year, as a Batch 1: January to June and Batch 2: July to Decembe

Mode of instructions: In person at the Institute only. No virtual mode is allowed.

How to apply: The applications shall be available once a year, as detailed below. All the applications are accepted online. No other mode will be accepted. The following are the deadlines for submission of the application.



Assistance for seeking Doctoral Research @ CSIR-NGRI.

Objective: Young researchers with excellent academic backgrounds committed to pursuing geoscience as a career. The following categories of applications will be accepted. SAC facilitates arranging an “Endorsement Letter” from the Head of the Institute/Director to enable the students to submit their application under various categories as mentioned below.

Group A

Eligibility: The postgraduate candidates who wish to pursue a PhD programme at CSIR-NGRI and would like to submit their application for funding to the respective Government Agency followed by PhD registration in AcSIR, CSIR-NGRI.

How to apply: The candidates may approach potential mentors in the Institute who meet their area of research interest and obtain a consent letter. Later, the candidate must submit the filled-in Application Form and relevant documents to the SAC.

Applications will be accepted quarterly every year i.e., till the end of February/May/August/November for evaluation.

Selection/Assessment: The application evaluation process will be conducted quarterly every year (i.e., second week of March/June/September/December).

The candidate should present the highlights of his/her proposed research. Based on the proposal's merits, the Committee will make a decision. If accepted, the candidate will be issued the necessary ‘Endorsement Letter’ from CSIR-NGRI, which he/she may use along with their application for the Fellowship sponsored by the concerned Govt. Agency or University.

NOTE: CSIR-NGRI does not offer any Doctoral Fellowships. Two categories of students: (i) Holding Fellowship through CSIR/UGC-JRF, SRF, DST-WOS, and (ii) Project Associates of various levels working in CSIR-NGRI Projects of both external and internal funding. Note: DST-INSPIRE may not be considered in this category; they are encouraged to enrol in AcSIR.

Group B

Eligibility: The postgraduate candidates awarded with Fellowship through CSIR/UGC-JRF, SRF, DST-WOS, and seek to register for a Ph.D. at any university in India other than AcSIR and to work at CSIR-NGRI.

How to apply: The candidates may approach potential mentors in the Institute who meet their area of research interest and obtain a consent letter. Later, the candidate must submit the filled-in Application Form and relevant documents to the SAC.

Applications will be accepted quarterly every year i.e., till the end of February/May/August/November for evaluation.

Selection/Assessment: The evaluation process will be conducted quarterly every year (i.e., second week of March/June/September/December).

The candidate should present the highlights of his/her proposed research. Based on the proposal's merits, the Committee will make a decision. Group C

Eligibility: The postgraduate candidates working as Project Assistants (PAT-I and II) of CSIR-NGRI are to be registered for a PhD degree from different universities and wish to pursue a PhD programme at CSIR-NGRI.

How to apply: The candidates may approach potential mentors in the Institute who meet their area of research interest and obtain a consent letter. Later, the candidate must submit the filled-in Application Form and relevant documents to the SAC.

Applications will be accepted quarterly every year (i.e., till the end of February/May/August/November for evaluation).

Selection/Assessment: The evaluation process will be conducted quarterly every year (i.e., second week of March/June/September/December).

The candidate should present the highlights of his/her proposed research. Based on the proposal's merits, the Committee will make a decision. If accepted, the candidate will be issued the necessary ‘Endorsement Letter’ from CSIR-NGRI, which he/she may use along with their application for the Fellowship sponsored by the concerned Govt. Agency or University.

NOTE: CSIR-NGRI does not offer any Doctoral Fellowships.

Assistance for seeking Post Doctoral Research @ CSIR-NGRI

Purpose: SAC facilitates arranging an “Endorsement Letter” from the Head of the Institute/Director to enable the students to submit their application to a respective govt. agency to pursue their Postdoctoral research at CSIR-NGRI.

Objective: To support early-career researcher who recently obtained their PhD degree, demonstrating outstanding research achievements and pioneering ideas in advanced geoscience research.

Eligibility: The doctoral degree holder wishes to join as a Post-Doctoral Fellow through various Fellowship viz., CSIR Senior Research Associateship (Pool) scheme, CSIR-RA, CSIR-Nehru Science Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship, DST-INSPIRE Faculty, DST-NPDF, DST-WOS and DST-WISE etc, offered by different govt. agencies.

How to apply: The candidates may approach potential mentors in the Institute who meet their area of research interest and obtain a consent letter. Later, the candidate must apply online and submit the required documents as instructed while applying.

The application should reach SAC well in time, at least 15 days before the last date to submit their application to the respective sponsoring agency, i.e., CSIR, DST, DBT, DAE, etc.

Selection/Assessment: The candidate should present the highlights of his/her proposed research in person or virtually through a PowerPoint presentation. Based on the proposal's merits, the Committee will make a decision. If accepted, the candidate will be issued the necessary ‘Endorsement Letter’ from CSIR-NGRI, which he/she may use along with their application for the Fellowship sponsored by the concerned Agency.

NOTE: CSIR-NGRI does not offer any Post-doctoral Fellowships

Assessment of Project Staff

Purpose: SAC evaluates the progress of Project Staff's work to extend their fellowship tenure and upgrade the grade.

Objective: To evaluate the Project Staff's performance across different projects and ensure their work aligns with the project's objectives.

Eligibility: The Project Staff (Project Associate-I and II, Project Scientists) working in MLPs, GAPs, HCPs, FTT/FCPs, except SSP projects.

How to apply: The Project Staff has to submit the Annual Progress Report to SAC (sac@ngri.res.in). Usually, SAC will send a reminder to submit their report. The Progress reports will be accepted quarterly every year (i.e., till the end of February/May/August/November) for evaluation.


Selection/Assessment:

The application evaluation process will be conducted quarterly every year (i.e., the second week of March/June/September/December).

The candidate should present the highlights of his/her proposed research in person before SAC. Based on the work progress, the Committee will recommend extending their tenure or upgrading the cadre.
