Earthquake Hazard

Earthquakes are one of the terrifying natural hazards, which have the potential to cause devastation to life and property. Surrounded as our country is by the Himalayan collision zone in the north and Andaman subduction zone to the east, along with the recent history of major earthquakes within the continental shield region, earthquakes and tsunamis are natural hazards, which require administration and populace to be in a state of ever preparedness. The high density of population and the traditionally spontaneous and unregulated growth of human habitation make a large section of the demography vulnerable to earthquake hazards due to ground shaking, liquefaction, ground displacement, possibly associated flooding and fires, which can cause widespread damage in a very short time. CSIR-NGRI has a long history of study of earthquakes and is committed to continued research in high-risk zones as well as continuous monitoring for high valued and strategic installations.

The ongoing projects in CSIR-NGRI on this theme are listed below.
