The work investigates the vast Deccan Basalt using GIS-based multi criteria decision making technique to identify suitable sites for future geological CO2storage (GCS) sites. It reveals the western part of the Deccan mainland, Saurashtra province in Gujarat, and Indore region of Madhya Pradesh as the most promising sites for GCS. The study also provides a first-order estimation of triggered seismicity risk by highlighting the critically stressed state of faults within the suitable regions. This underlines the need for more detailed investigations prior to any injection operations. By combining multiple geological and environmental factors using decision-making models, the research highlights areas that can safely store CO₂ for long periods, supporting climate-change mitigation efforts.
